What is Basket Weaving?

Basket weaving is one of the oldest crafts in the world — and right now, it's having a well-deserved revival. What Materials Do You Need to Start Basket Weaving?

Traditional basket weaving uses natural materials such as:

• Rattan cane — a flexible, durable plant fibre that's ideal for beginners. It's easy to work with, holds its shape well, and gives a beautiful natural finish.
• Centre cane / round reed — used for the frame (stakes) and the weaving (weavers).
• Water — soaking cane for a few minutes before weaving makes it pliable and easy to bend without cracking.

What Can You Make as a Beginner?

You might be surprised at just how much you can create as a complete beginner. Our most popular starter projects include:

How Long Does It Take to Weave a Basket?

Most of our beginner kits take between 2 and 6 hours to complete — from around 2–3 hours for the pencil holder to 4–6 hours for the medium round basket. Each coaster takes about 45 minutes to an hour, while a larger basket makes a perfect weekend project.

Is Basket Weaving Hard to Learn?

Not at all — especially with a good kit! The fundamental weaving pattern (over-under, over-under) is intuitive and repetitive, which many people find meditative and calming. Once you've got the rhythm, it's incredibly satisfying.
